MIDDLE SCHOOL ALTERNATIVE
EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Middle School Alternative Education Program (MAP) is located at the Melcher’s Complex at 610 Gayle Street in the Tyler Building, off Route 17 behind the Arby’s Restaurant between Route 1 and I-95.
The program is designed for middle school students in sixth through eighth grades who attend Stafford County Public Schools and are referred by the Superintendent or the School Board following a long-term suspension or expulsion. MAP meets daily from approximately 7:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for sixth and seventh grade students and from 11:30 a.m. until approximately 2:50 p.m. for eighth grade students.
The Middle School Alternative Education Program is not designed to fully duplicate a student’s regular middle school schedule; rather, MAP provides instruction in the four core academic subjects: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. There may also be a community service component embedded within the Program.
Essentially, good behavior, daily academic progress, and mandatory daily attendance are the primary expectations for each student enrolled in MAP. Conferences with students and their families are scheduled regularly. Counseling support is provided by MAP’s guidance counselor. The administrative and budgetary requirements of the Program are conducted through the Alternative Education Office of the Stafford County Public Schools.
Families of referred students are required to have a face-to-face intake conference with the Alternative Education Administrator. Bus service is provided through the division’s Transportation Department.
After the family’s intake conference, students are not presumed to be enrolled forever in the Program. A student may be dismissed from MAP for failing to follow Program rules, for not attending, and for not making regular academic progress. All aspects of the Program are explained and examined in the entry conference. If a student successfully completes the Program, the student is recommended to return to his/her base school.
