OUR STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

New English Textbook
The Elementary English Textbook Adoption process is now underway! We have a committee consisting of one teacher and one parent from each of our 17 elementary schools, along with a special educator and an administrator. All grade levels are represented. The textbook committee is chaired by Janice Brunson, Elementary Literacy Coordinator.   The textbook samples are coming in now. You are invited to come and view them at WCES in room 23,  at Alvin Bandy Central Office Complex in PDC room 16, or at England Run library.   A rating scale will be available to help guide your observations. The committee plans to eliminate three of the six programs under consideration by January 26, and then come to a final decision on one program by March 5. The final choice will then be presented to the Division Committee for approval on March 19. Purchase will be contingent on next year’s budget. The textbook committee meetings are open to the public, and the schedule can be found on the Stafford County fusion page under Instructional Programs: Textbook Adoptions.

A note for parents and the community from Sheriff Jett

You may have noticed an increase in the number of deputies in neighborhoods across the county recently as children went about the business of going to school.  In light of the events in Spotsylvania County and the alleged attempted abductions I felt it was prudent to increase our presence in neighborhoods for the foreseeable future.  It is a normal course of action for the Stafford Sheriff’s Office to be in neighborhoods at school time everyday and while we have had no reported incidents like those in Spotsylvania County I felt the extra steps were warranted at this time.

I have listed below some tips that parents may find helpful in keeping children safe when going to and coming home from school.  I have also listed the web site for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.  This site has a wealth of information for parents with tips on how to keep children safe.  As always, if you notice anything suspicious please call the Sheriff’s Office immediately.  Working in partnership is critical in preventing these types of incidents.  Thanks again for all that you do.  It does make a difference.

Sheriff Charles Jett

TIPS:

1.  Make sure that your child goes to and comes home from the bus stop with at least one other person.
2.  If your child walks to school make sure that they walk with other individuals.  Make sure the children are walking in a safe manner and have a safe, well viewed path to school.  Avoid walking through woods, alleys or unfamiliar areas.
3.  If possible establish safe houses along the route that children can go to if they feel threatened.

Our Mission

The mission of Winding Creek Elementary School is to create a sanctuary for the development of the whole child.  We provide a solid foundation through a nurturing and stimulating environment for all to know that they have unlimited potential to achieve their dreams.
Our Vision

The dedicated family of WCES, believing that all students can be successful, envision a respectful partnership within the school community resulting in an enriched learning experience while meeting the changing and diverse challenges of an information literate society.  Whereas students are enthusiastic, confident, and inspired to realize their highest potential while being productive and moral citizens, by having a staff that fosters their life-long academic and social success based on individual needs.

Our School Improvement Plan (SIP) for 2011-12 has Two objectives:

Objective 1: Differentiated Instruction

Differentiated math instruction to meet students’ needs: Emphasis on meeting instructional needs of all students with emphasis on meeting the instructional needs of disadvantaged and minority students in math. Additionally, to effectively implement the new math series Envisions with the supplemental Investigations program.

Vocabulary and word study: Word study to improve spelling and basic literacy in K-3, vocabulary training in 4th and 5th to improve reading/vocab skills to meet the needs of disadvantaged and minority students with vocabulary and reading instruction.

Objective 2: Writing

Standardize writing expectations at all grade levels: K, 1, and 2 printing instruction, 2-5 cursive instruction and utilization and K through 5 keyboarding and typing skills.

Our third year with writing emphasis: school wide quarterly writing prompts, update common rubrics, add differentiated rubrics, plan for grammar instruction, and administration review. Good instruction and practice in 4th grade last year (2010-2011) will benefit for our 2011-12 5th grade students leading to improved pass advanced scores.

Paw Pride

Students throughout the school may earn "Golden Paw" stickers for following the rules all around the building.  When a child earns a "Golden Paw" sticker, they bring that sticker back to their classroom teacher.  Classroom teachers will place them on the "Winding Creek Golden Paws" poster on their classroom door.  When a class earns ten "Golden Paw" stickers, they will receive a letter above their classroom door to spell out the words "P A W P R I D E S P I R I T".  When each class spells out "Paw Pride Spirit" above their door, they will receive a special treat (such as snow cone party, popcorn party, free ice cream, etc.)

Cafeteria Paws

As children follow the Cafeteria Rules, they earn a "Cafeteria Paw" velcro paw on their class poster.  Rules in the cafeteria are as follows:
  • Respect Your Pack Leaders
  • Keep Seated and Raise Your Paw
  • Keep Your Paws to Yourself
  • No Howling to Other Packs
  • Keep Your Den Clean

When a class earns 20 "Cafeteria Paws" on their class poster, the entire class earns a reward (such as free ice cream, etc.)
